Thatch roof Vs Synthetic Thatch Roof

Thatch roofing is a traditional roofing method that involves using dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, rushes, sedges, etc. to create a roof covering.

In developed countries, thatch roofing has started to become popular again, as a conscious design choice because of its aesthetics and for its ecologically friendly credentials as a sustainable material.

The material composition of thatch, with its natural voids and surface irregularities, provides excellent insulation when dry and compact. However, when degraded with an accumulation of moss and rainwater, the insulation properties become less reliable and can become vulnerable to fire.

Different types of roof thatching:

  •       Combed Wheat Reed: ls known as 'Devon' reed as this form of thatching is the common form in the West Country.

  •  Long Straw Thatch: this is a specially cultivated wheat reed of up to 3 feet in length. The stalks are uncombed (retaining the ears) and then laid in thick bundles.

  •     Water Reed: this type of reed was traditionally associated with marshy and wetland areas. Here, reeds are longer and harder than wheat reeds and survive for a longer time.

  •     Heather: It is commonly found in moorland areas of England and particularly in Scotland. It is usual to see it laid over a low, arched roof, netted and held in place by ropes which are weighted with large stones that dangle along the side of the walls of the house.

Natural thatch was once used for roofing, but it is being phased out due to its lack of durability and care. Synthetic thatching, on the other hand, is more eco-friendly and requires very little maintenance. Palmex has been widely utilized in synthetic thatching all over the world.

Differences between Palmex Synthetic thatch and natural thatch:

ü Guaranteed 100% watertight for roofs sloped at 30 degrees or greater.

ü HDPE is naturally a low-flammable material.

ü Guaranteed fade resistance.

ü Material does not attract insects, rodents, birds, etc.

ü Eco-friendly

Natural thatch

ü Life expectancy is about 2 to 5 years

ü Made up of dry vegetation and it can be damaged easily.

ü Regular maintenance is required and recurring costs.

ü Requires very thick layering of leaf volume to attain water-tightness.

ü Highly flammable and may cause fires.

ü High risk of fire propagation.

ü Fast, progressive fading.
